Diagnostic or clinical specimens collected during an investigation of an outbreak of a serious, life-threatening or fatal disease of unknown cause must be handled as Category A infectious substances.

When the infectious substances to be transported are unknown, but suspected of meeting the criteria for inclusion in Category A and assignment to UN 2814 or UN 2900, the words “Suspected Category A Infectious Substance” must be shown, in parentheses, following the proper shipping name on the transport document (not on the outer packagings).
