Class 7 Radioactive Material

(Shipping Medical Radioactive Materials)

Webinar - Shipping Medical Radioactive Materials

The regulations governing shipments of radioactive materials are numerous, and not all pertain to shipments of medical or pharmaceutical radioactive materials. To simplify the process, Saf-T-Pak has designed a training course that focuses on those regulations applying only to medical radioactive materials, including the regulatory requirements as outlined in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, as well as ICAO/IATA.

This course is designed to meet the training requirements outlined in specific shipping regulations. The course offers a logical, step-by-step approach to shipping radioactive materials that are specific to the medical community. Classification, packaging, labeling, and transport security requirements are covered, as well as administrative issues (which could be subject to audits). This course will place the participant in compliance with the relevant training and security requirements, plus provide the necessary knowledge to ship medical radioactive materials in accordance with the regulations. The course concludes with an examination that is designed to verify the student’s understanding of the subject.

Upon completion of the Shipping Medical Radioactive Materials training the student will be able to:

  • Identify specific training and security requirements applicable to the shipping of radioactive materials
  • Identify and comply with any applicable regulatory authorities
  • Assign the correct Proper shipping name to a given shipment
  • Select the correct level of packaging to their shipment
  • Comply with radiation levels and dose rate limitations that apply to shipments of radioactive materials
  • Mark and label a package correctly

The course covers the regulatory requirements for shipping medical radioactive materials, including identification, classification, packaging, marking and labelling. Each student will be provided with a training guide. A calculator will be required during class. It is recommended that students also have a copy of the U.S. regulations, which are available online at no charge. Upon completion of the course, students will be provided access to an online exam that will test their understanding of the regulatory requirements for the shipment of medical radioactive materials. Upon successful completion of the exam, a certificate of training will be provided.

Although there are no pre-perquisites for this course, it is recommended that the students are familiar with the dangerous goods regulations.
